2.4.6. Conflict-induced displacement and return

According to IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) Data, as of 30 July 2026, West Darfur state was hosting 374 907 IDPs, most of them displaced from within West Darfur (258 402), followed by Khartoum (48 175). Of the total number of IDPs in West Darfur, 127 415 IDPs were located in the El Geneina district, followed by Kereneik district with 68 465 IDPs. At the same time, an additional 103 744 displaced persons from West Darfur were hosted in other states. As of 28 July 2026, West Darfur state recorded 22 585 returned IDPs, mostly returning from outside Sudan (21 750).732 In early August 2026, fighting in Sirba district reportedly displaced an estimated 18 000 people from more than 20 villages, most of whom fled across the border into Chad.733
