Shifting conflict dynamics in late 2024 reportedly led to a decline in armed clashes in Al Jazirah state in 2025.1006 FEWS NET described the state as comparatively calm as of October 2025.1007 The state reportedly witnessed ‘limited stabilisation’ as IDPs returned to their, in many cases, destroyed houses.1008 The Egyptian independent online media outlet Mada Masr in its ongoing Sudan coverage described Al Jazirah state as of March 2026 as ‘relatively secure’, prompting the authorities there to rebuild the manufacturing sector.1009
In 2026, several drone strikes suspected to have been launched by the RSF, targeted a camp of the Sudan Shield Forces (SSF) in Al-Butana region,1010 and another drone struck the house of SSF commander Abu Aqla Keikel, killing six of his family members.1011
In November 2025, the Sudanese online news platform Al Taghyeer noted an increase in violations against civilians committed by the SSF and the Al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade in the state: for example, storming the village of Um Duwana in Al Hasahisa district and intimidating the local population by firing into the air, entering homes and forcibly shaving young men’s heads.1012 In September 2025, the governor of Al Jazirah state announced that 5 000 citizens would be tried for collaboration with the RSF, prompting criticism of human rights organisations fearing politically motivated mass trials.1013
