Hama governorate consists of five districts: As-Salamiyeh, As-Suqaylabiyah, Hama, Masyaf and Muhradah. These districts are further divided into a total of 22 sub‑districts.588 As of April 2026, IOM estimated the population of Hama governorate at about 2 million, including residents, IDPs and returnees from abroad.589 The capital of the governorate is the city of Hama,590 located on the banks of the river Orontes,591 with approximately 656 000 inhabitants.592
