2.1.1. Administrative division and population estimates

Aleppo governorate is divided into eight administrative districts, namely Afrin (or Efrin), Ain al-Arab (or Kobane), Al-Bab, As-Safira, A’zaz (or Azaz), Jarabulus, Jebel Saman (Mount Simeon district) and Menbij (or Manbij), which are further divided into a total of 40 sub-districts.442 Its capital is the city of Aleppo.443 As of April 2026, IOM estimated the governorate’s population at 5 702 889, including residents, IDPs and returnees from abroad.444
