Section 2. Major developments in asylum in the European Union in 2024
Following the adoption of the Pact on Migration and Asylum in May 2024, EU institutions, Agencies and Member States intensified their efforts to prepare for its implementation, while continuing to address a steadily high number of people seeking protection in Europe. The question of effective management of borders maintained its prominence in the European policy discourse, amidst discussions on the importance of ensuring respect for fundamental rights at the EU’s external borders.
In 2024, the EU continued to provide protection to millions of displaced people from Ukraine. With Russia’s war of aggression continuing, temporary protection was extended until March 2026, offering stability and predictability to more than 4 million beneficiaries.
