Foundation modules

Foundation modules

Foundation modules introduce the core concepts and professional principles required for working in asylum and reception contexts. They provide an entry point to the European Asylum Curriculum (EAC) and support the development of essential knowledge and skills needed across different roles in the asylum and reception field.

These modules are particularly suited for newly appointed staff, professionals supporting asylum and reception procedures, and practitioners from related sectors who require a basic understanding of international protection and the EU asylum framework.

What you will learn

Through foundation modules, participants gain an understanding of:

  • the legal and institutional framework governing international protection in the European Union

  • the fundamental rights principles underpinning asylum and reception systems

  • ethical and professional standards in working with applicants for international protection

  • communication in intercultural and sensitive contexts

  • the identification of vulnerability and special needs

Module availability

The foundation modules listed in this catalogue include both modules aligned with the Pact on Migration and Asylum and modules developed under the previous legal framework. Some modules remain available during the transition period to support ongoing training activities.

In particular, the module “Introduction to vulnerability” will be progressively replaced by “Introduction to vulnerability and special needs”, which reflects the updated training framework.

Available modules

  • Introduction to communication for asylum and reception practitioners

  • Introduction to ethical and professional standards

  • Introduction to vulnerability and special needs

  • Introduction to the legal framework on fundamental rights and international protection in the EU

  • Introduction to vulnerability

Together, these modules establish the knowledge base required for further learning within the European Asylum Curriculum and prepare participants to progress to core and specialised training modules.
